English

Background and Objective: Eating disorders are among the most challenging psychological disorders, with significant physical and mental health consequences. This study aimed to examine the role of mentalization and emotion regulation in predicting eating disorders within a structural equation modeling (SEM) framework.

Method: This correlational study employed structural equation modeling. The statistical population consisted of 320 adolescents (160 boys and 160 girls) aged 15–18 in Shiraz, selected through cluster sampling. Data were collected using the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (ERQ-CA), and Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ), and analyzed using SPSS and AMOS software.

Findings: The results indicated that both positive (β = 0.38) and negative (β = 0.24) emotion regulation had significant direct effects on eating disorders. Mentalization (certainty) acted as a protective factor with a negative effect (β = -0.17). Mediation analysis revealed that emotion regulation mediated the relationship between mentalization and eating disorders (P < 0.05). The model fit indices (RMSEA = 0.097; CFI = 0.922) indicated an acceptable fit.

Conclusion: The findings highlight the importance of strengthening mentalization and emotion regulation as key factors in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders. School-based educational interventions targeting these constructs are recommended. By addressing the research gap in examining the interaction between mentalization and emotion regulation, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of these disorders.
