Abstract
Background and Aim: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is one of the most common personality disorders, highlighting a pressing need for research due to its profound effects on individuals, families, and society at large. This study aims to investigate the foundational concepts and principles underlying Borderline Personality Disorder.

Methods: The research utilizes a descriptive-analytical approach based on library resources.

Results: The findings indicate that there are numerous contributing factors associated with Borderline Personality Disorder. Certain studies suggest that childhood maltreatment, especially emotional abuse, serves as a significant risk factor in the development of various personality disorders, including BPD. Furthermore, an extremely dysfunctional and chaotic family environment may trigger characteristics linked to Borderline Personality Disorder. Additional research has demonstrated that increased activity in the behavioral inhibition system may make individuals more susceptible to internalizing disorders, while heightened activity in the behavioral activation system can result in impulsive behavior and promote the onset of externalizing disorders.

Conclusion: Considering that feelings of emptiness and persistent anxiety are common in internalizing disorders alongside impulsivity, reckless behavior, and suicidal tendencies found in externalizing disorders, it seems that individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder exhibit heightened sensitivity within both brain-behavior systems.
